Work Now Guaranteed Until 2022: Meyer Turku to Build Two New Ships for Carnival Corporation

Industrial PRIME | September 7, 2016

Finnish Meyer Turku has signed a memorandum of agreement with the world’s largest cruise ship operator Carnival Corporation & plc for two new, 180,000-GT cruise ships.

The ships will be built for Carnival Cruise Lines with expected deliveries in 2020 and 2022. With the same agreement, Carnival Corporation also orders one 180,000-GT cruise ship from German Meyer Werft for P&O Cruises. The ship is to be delivered in 2020.

All three ships will be powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas) and based on the next-generation “green cruising” ship design developed by Carnival Corporation and its partners.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of introducing LNG-powered ships to the cruise industry,” said Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald. “We are working with our partners to achieve shipbuilding breakthroughs such as this one that will help us produce the most efficient and sustainable ships we have ever built.”

The ships ordered from Meyer Turku will be the first ones to fully benefit from the shipyard’s investments in next-generation production facilities and IT systems, currently exceeding €75 million.

Thanks to these two ships, the shipyard’s order book now reaches all the way until 2022.
