Wärtsilä has signed a contract for the delivery of a 67 MW Smart Power Generation power plant to Mauritius. The order includes four Wärtsilä 46 engines running on heavy fuel oil.

According to Wärtsilä, energy consumption in Mauritius has increased due to economic growth and a growing tourism industry. To meet the rising demand, the retired diesel generating sets at the St Louis Power Station will be replaced with Wärtsilä engines.

The modernised power station will provide semi-baseload power, including daily starts and stops, to the local residents and industries.

The fast-reacting Wärtsilä plant will support Mauritius in its renewable energy integration by compensating for the gaps in the intermittent output of renewable energy sources. According to the target set by the country, renewable energy will comprise 35% of the total power generated by 2025.

Wärtsilä’s delivery is scheduled for late 2016. The plant will be operational by September 2017.
