New Wärtsilä Power Plant to Halve Carbon Emissions at Minnesota Utility Site

Industrial PRIME | January 4, 2016

Wärtsilä will supply a 47 MW Smart Power Generation power plant to Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) in Minnesota, USA.

The order includes five Wärtsilä 34SG engines running on natural gas. The power plant will replace aged coal and gas turbine-based capacity. As a result, efficiency is nearly doubled, while hourly carbon emissions are reduced by 50 percent.

Minnesota’s Renewable Energy Standard is one of the strongest in the USA: as much as 25 percent of the state’s total electrical generation should come from renewable sources by 2025. To support the increasing use of wind and solar energy, fast load-following capacity offered by Wärtsilä’s technology will come in handy.

Wärtsilä’s delivery is scheduled for autumn 2017, while the plant itself is expected to be fully operational in May 2018.
