After years of development, Wärtsilä has launched its new medium speed engine, the Wärtsilä 31.

Designed to serve a variety of vessel types, the Wärtsilä 31 engine significantly reduces maintenance requirements and costs, while raising fuel efficiency, fuel flexibility, and operational optimization to new levels far beyond anything else currently available.

“With this breakthrough development, which is based on the introduction of the very latest technology, we can now open the doors to a new level of optimization that is valid throughout the entire life cycle of the vessel,” says Roger Holm, Senior Vice President, Ship Power Engines, Wärtsilä.

Wärtsilä’s new engine comes in three versions: Diesel, Dual-Fuel (DF) and Spark-Ignited Gas (SG). The multi-fuel capabilities of the engine extend the possibilities for operators to utilise different qualities of fuels.

Thanks to its high fuel efficiency levels, the Wärtsilä 31 engine has already been granted a Guinness World Records title for the most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine in the world.
