Isku Interior and Samsung Join Forces to Develop Next-Generation Classroom

Industrial PRIME | June 18, 2015

Isku Interior, a Finnish company providing interior design and furniture solutions for public premises, has teamed up with tech giant Samsung to create the classroom for the next generation.

Digital solutions are becoming an integral part of learning environments across the world. Isku Interior, in whose business school furniture has played an important role for years, is following the changes closely. Now, furniture for learning environments is about to become the spearhead of the company’s exports.

“Things are changing rapidly,” says Design Director Antti Olin. “But for education to work, it is important to make the learning environment itself work as a whole. That concerns the furniture, too.”

Isku Interior decided to join forces with Samsung, one of the top providers of technological solutions – tablets, screens and other technology – used in learning environments.

Against what one might expect, the companies are not integrating furniture and tablets. According to Olin, technology is developing at such a fast pace that doing so would not make much sense.

“Instead, we offer furniture solutions that take into account the classroom – or even the entire school building – where more and more technology is used,” Olin says. “Our solutions will help ensure that everything works as a whole.”

Starting from June, the achievements of Isku Interior and Samsung can be seen in the form of a life-size classroom at selected Isku Interior outlets in Finland.

“I believe a Finnish concept can have great potential in South Korea. Finland’s good reputation as well as the continuous high positions in the PISA rankings will surely help create positive associations.”

In June, another classroom will be loaded inside a container and shipped to the city of Gwangju in South Korea. An exhibition showcasing Nordic design will be held at Gwangju Museum of Art starting from September.

“Our solutions will be on display there for a good three months before the exhibition moves to Seoul,” Olin says. “I believe a Finnish concept can have great potential in South Korea. Finland’s good reputation as well as the continuous high positions in the PISA rankings will surely help create positive associations.”

Isku Interior is looking for new export markets with an open mind. South Korea is considered an interesting opportunity, and Isku has recently been eyeing the neighbouring Japan, too.

In addition to East Asia, Isku Interior is doing preparations for starting marketing and sales work in Dubai. Isku Middle East, a new subsidiary run as a joint venture in cooperation with a local partner, will soon be established.
